WHAT ARE “SANCTUARY CITIES”?
Cities across the United States that refuse to comply with federal immigration laws are bracing for a showdown with the Trump Administration over “Sanctuary Cities”. A “Sanctuary City” is a city that has adopted a policy of sheltering undocumented immigrants. These municipalities forbid the police or other city employees to inquire about a person’s immigration status. There are thirty-two cities throughout the United States that have adopted such policies and are self-designated “sanctuaries”.
After defeating Hillary Clinton to win the Presidency, President Elect Trump appeared on the news program, “60 Minutes”. During his interview, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to deport 2-3 million undocumented criminal offenders. If this promise is kept, we can expect a Sanctuary City Showdown early next year as defiant Democratic Mayors from twelve of these cities have threatened to defy the Trump Administration’s enforcement of existing immigration law. President Elect Trump has warned that any city willingly breaking the law will put their federal funding at risk.
THE MURDER OF KATE STEINLE
San Francisco, which vows to remain a sanctuary harboring illegal immigrants, is at the center of the national debate over Sanctuary Cities. On July 1, 2015, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, murdered 32 year-old Kathryn (Kate) Steinle. Native to Mexico, Lopez-Sanchez had seven felony convictions on his record and had previously been deported back to Mexico five times. On March 26, 2015, at the request of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, the United States Bureau of Prisons had turned Sanchez over to San Francisco authorities for a drug warrant. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had issued a detainer for Sanchez requesting that he be kept in custody until immigration authorities could pick him up. However, as a Sanctuary City, whose policy dictates limited cooperation with ICE only to cases where there are active charges; San Francisco released him one month later.
The murder of Ms. Steinle sparked political criticism from the right and left and was even mentioned by President Elect Trump in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. Kate’s Law, which would increase the mandatory minimum and maximum prison terms for illegal immigrants reentering the country after deportation, has failed to pass in congress. New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, also remains defiant and vows to risk 10 billion in federal funding to protect illegals. de Blasio went as far as to say he would consider deleting a database of 850,000 residents who unlawfully entered the country and were granted New York City identification cards. He believes that undocumented immigrants will be less likely to report crimes if they fear deportation. Mayor of the crime-capitol of the US, Chicago’s own Rahm Emanuel, asserted that his city will also resist any attempt by Trump to expel undocumented people. In a joint press conference with Emanuel, Illinois Congressman, Luis Guiterrez (D) stated that actions to undue President Obama’s executive orders on immigration would be considered “an act of war”.
CRIME STATISTICS
The majority of the more than eleven million people in the United States unlawfully are decent and peaceful people. However, according to data provided by federal, state, and local law enforcement sources, illegal immigrants are three-times as likely to be convicted of murder as members of the general population and account for far more crimes than their 3.5-percent share of the U.S. population would suggest. There are approximately 2.1 million legal or illegal immigrants with criminal convictions living free or behind bars in the U.S., according to ICE’s Secure Communities office. Each year, about 900,000 legal and illegal immigrants are arrested, and 700,000 are released from jail, prison, or probation. ICE estimates that there are more than 1.2 million criminal aliens at large in the U.S. Illegal aliens cost US tax payers 113 billion dollars per year.
By refusing to obey the law, the Democratic Mayors in charge of these Sanctuary Cities are feigning compassion for votes and putting the health and well-being of all Americans at risk. I wish I could choose which laws I needed to follow and which laws I could break. If I follow the example set by these mayors, I would certainly choose not to pay my income tax ever again. Murders like Kate Steinle’s are purely preventable with better border security and the enforcement of existing federal laws. Every mayor that knowingly harbors undocumented criminals is to blame for this beautiful young lady’s life cut far too short. Building trust in the community means uniformly enforcing all laws for all residents. Excluding illegal aliens from following the law for political gain reduces trust in law enforcement and puts all American lives in danger.
