What is a mall brawl? A mall brawl is when young adults use social media, specifically Snap Chat, to create disturbances in local malls. These events have happened all over the country, but are not collectively organized. Mall brawls are not new. The Arden Mall in Sacramento California had fights break out in 2012 where two adult teens and one 15 year old were arrested for fighting in public. In 2014 the Arden Mall closed two hours early for similar disturbances.

There seems to be no pattern for where these brawls will break out. Philadelphia Mills had two nights of disturbances. The first night 100 teenagers showed up to create chaos. The second night 200 young adults showed up by city bus, but this time the police were ready.

There were three arrests that may lead to charges of inciting a riot; which is a felony. Other mall disturbances include Independence Mall in Missouri where 100 teens hassled shoppers, a brawl and possible gun fire at Hulen Mall in Fort Worth Texas, Monroeville Mall near Pittsburgh had reports of up to 1000 teenagers intruding on shoppers, and Fox Valley Mall in Aurora Illinois where fighting broke out.

It is unclear why these events occurred other than to harass, disrupt, and intrude on holiday shopping. There is also the economic impact of stores being inconvenienced to close early and lose business. Some shoppers have decided to stay home or go online to use their gift cards. Many malls have struggled to make a comeback after the rise of internet shopping and the downturn economically for brick and mortar operations. At one time in America teenagers flocking to malls was the way to socialize and hang out. Now it seems that teens hang out on social media and flock to malls to cause destruction.
