This Day In History: Medal of Honor created [1862]

President Abraham Lincoln signs into law a measure calling for the awarding of a U.S. Army Medal of Honor, in the name of Congress, “to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities during the present insurrection.” The previous December, Lincoln had approved a provision creating a U.S. Navy Medal of Valor, which was the basis of the Army Medal of Honor created by Congress in July 1862. The first U.S. Army soldiers to receive what would become the nation’s highest military honor were six members of a Union raiding party who in 1862 penetrated deep into Confederate territory to destroy bridges and railroad tracks between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia.

More Coffee, Longer Life According To Two New Studies

Two studies have confirmed what morning challenged people and coffee lovers already know: coffee is life. Ok, maybe it’s not that serious, but it’s at least an ability to function in the morning for some. But, the studies, both published Monday, have resurfaced the centuries-old conversation on coffee’s health effects, and both studies were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Quentin Tarantino to make Manson murders film

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Pulp Fiction and Hateful Eight director will write and direct the as-yet untitled film, which concerns the notorious killings of five people, including pregnant actor Sharon Tate – wife of director Roman Polanski – carried out by followers of Charles Manson in 1969. Manson and four followers later received life imprisonment – and his group were also responsible for a number of other killings during the 1960s.
