AlphaGo, the much-praised artificial intelligence agent developed by Google DeepMind, has been enhanced so that it can play two more games in addition to the ancient Chinese board game Go.

DeepMind announced on Thursday that AlphaZero — the latest version of the famous AlphaGo AI that beat Go world champion Lee Sedol — can also play chess and shogi (Japanese chess) to superhuman levels. The company, acquired for £400 million in 2014, described the breakthrough in the journal Science [PDF].
