An astute follower of politics recently called our office at the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Political Action Committee. He wanted to draw our attention to a YouTube video from February.
The Reuters video gained attention for a gaffe made by Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden. He mistakenly said that he was running for the U.S. Senate.
But what the caller wanted me to notice was what Biden said afterward. Indeed, he encouraged voters to look him over and if they didn’t like what they saw, they should “vote for the other Biden.”
One can surmise he meant to say “vote for the other guy.” But his slip of the tongue is very telling for this reason: Biden is not the man he used to be, when it comes to the issue of public funding of abortion.
For most of his 47-year political career, Biden opposed taxpayer funding of abortion—a position shared by the vast majority of Americans, according to public opinion polls. But, in a campaign season change of heart, in 2019 the former Vice President said he believes in scrapping the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funding of abortion except in a rare minority of cases (rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother).
