Another police officer who responded to the violent siege at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 has died, according to WUSA-TV. Acting D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee identified the deceased as Officer Jeffrey Smith.
Smith is the second police officer who responded to the Capitol attack to die by suicide in recent weeks. U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood took his own life on Jan. 10, days after the siege. A third officer, Brian Sicknick, died from injuries he sustained in the attack.
Contee said both Smith and Liebengood “took their own lives in the aftermath of that battle,” during a closed-door session on Tuesday, according to Politico.
“We honor the service and sacrifices of officers Brian Sicknick, Howard Liebengood, and Jeffrey Smith, and offer condolences to all the grieving families,” Contee said in a statement obtained by WUSA. “The costs for this insurrection – both human and monetary – will be steep.”
