Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) defended the Second Amendment during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday in the wake of a mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado.

During a hearing on “Constitutional and Common Sense Steps to Reduce Gun Violence,” Cruz criticized Democrat efforts to enact universal background checks and other gun control legislation as “ridiculous theater.”

“We have had far too many tragedies in our country… I’ve been to too damn many of these,” Cruz said.  “Every time there’s a shooting, we play this ridiculous theater where this committee gets together and proposes a bunch of laws that would do nothing to stop these murders.”

“What happens in this committee after every mass shooting is Democrats propose taking away guns from law-abiding citizens, because that’s their political objective,” Cruz said.

“But what they propose, not only does it not reduce crime, it makes it worse,” he added. “The jurisdictions in this country with the strictest gun control have among the highest rates of crime and murder.

“When you disarm law abiding citizens, you make them more likely to be victims. If you want to stop these murders, go after the murderers.”

Cruz’s arguments come as several prominent Democrats including Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Sen. Majority Leader Chuck SchumerBarack Obama and Joe Biden have all urged members of their party to introduce a new bill calling for a ban on so-called assault weapons.
