Joe Biden is set to nominate an open gun control advocate as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Biden will tap David Chipman, an adviser at the gun control group Giffords and former member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to head the ATF, a Justice Department agency.

Giffords was formed by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), who survived a mass shooting outside Tucson in 2011.

Chipman’s nomination will dovetail with Biden’s gun control executive actions which he’ll announce on Thursday.

“If confirmed, Chipman would be the first permanent director of ATF since 2015. His nomination is expected to be welcomed by gun safety advocates and comes as Biden is preparing a series of executive actions on guns,” the Hill reported.

Chipman will need at least 51 votes in the Senate to be confirmed, which the Democrats have an edge on with Kamala Harris as a potential tiebreaker.
