Over the weekend in Chicago, at least 27 people were shot, three of whom died, including a 7-year-old girl who was sitting with her father in a car at a McDonald’s drive-thru when she was killed.
As reported by the Apr. 19 Chicago Tribune, the first person shot and killed was 18-year-old Jawon Ward. He was standing inside a business with a woman on Friday, about 7:00 p.m., when someone walked in and shot him and the woman.
Ward “was shot in the chest and face, and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital,” said The Tribune. “The 44-year-old woman was shot in the left shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai in good condition.”
On Sunday, “a 7-year-old girl and a 29-year-old man were in a vehicle in a McDonald’s drive-thru at Roosevelt Road and Kedzie Avenue, when they heard shots and felt pain, police said,” according to The Tribune. “The girl was struck multiple times to the body, and an on-scene police unit took her to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead.“
The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
“Family identified the girl as Jaslyn Adams, and the man as her father, Jontae Adams,” said The Tribune. “Jaslyn’s grandmother told CBS 2 that Jontae Adams called her as soon as the shooting happened, saying, ‘They shot my baby!'”
Also on Sunday, two men were standing on the sidewalk in the South Austin neighborhood, when someone drove up in a car and shot both of them. The older victim was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead. The younger victim survived.
In other incidents, reported The Tribune,
— On Sunday, “two people were shot on the Bishop Ford Freeway,” a 32-year-old woman and a 42-year-old woman.
— “On Sunday evening, four people were injured in three shootings within a span of a few blocks in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.”
— On Sunday in a restaurant, a 33-year-old man was shot in the leg and a 19-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen.

So far this year there have been 175 homicides in Chicago. Most of the homicide victims are young, black men.
